The world’s longest place name appears on a sign that is difficult to photograph because of its length. It is almost impossible for a non-Maori speaker to pronounce.
Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapikimaungahoronukupokaiwhenuakitanatahu is the 85 letter Māori name for an unremarkable 305 metres high hill, located near Waipukurau in Hawke’s Bay. The English translation roughly means—wait for it— ‘the summit where Tamatea, the man with the big knees, the climber of mountains, the land-swallower who travelled about, played his nose flute to his loved one’.
